NEW ENGLAND MUTINY 1, BOSTON AZTEC BREAKERS RESERVES 2 On June 19th, the two sides battled to a 1-1 draw but after a long-range shot from Becky Gundling beat Boston goalkeeper Rebecca Ritchie in the 68th minute, the Mutiny would surrender two goals in the next seven minutes in tonight's 2-1 loss.
After a scoreless first half, the Breakers Reserves stepped up the heat in the second half, consistently pressuring New England keeper Erica Correa through scoring chances from Rebecca Mays and Taleen Dimirdjian.
The Mutiny would respond to make an action-packed second half, with Karyn Riviere skimming the top of the cross bar in the 57th minute, while Jenny Maurer would shoot just wide in the 68th minute.
The Breakers Reserves just could not get out of their defensive end, and Gundling would intercept a failed clearance. Her low, hard blast from 30 yards out would beat Ritchie low to her right and inside the post for the 1-0 lead.
Boston immediately responded through the leading scorer of the WPSL - Leah Blayney - and as she drove towards goal the New England defense focused too much on her. Her pass would find an open Becky Ryan, who tapped in the ball into an empty net to tie the match in the 69th minute.
Blayney would raise her game to another level, shooting just wide in the 72nd minute and setting up the game-winning goal in the 75th minute. In a top-notch set play, Blayney's short corner would find Anna Caniglia at the top of the box.
Her one-time pass to Karise Hilt caught the Mutiny defense ball watching and it was a simple side-footed shot at the back post that proved to be the game-winner. In the 88th minute, the home side would have an opportunity to tie the match, but Gundling's header off a Riviere free kick from the left flank would sail wide of the far post.
With the loss, New England finishes with a below .500 record for the first time in the team's eight-year history. With the win, Boston looks to be the top seed in the upcoming East Conference playoffs, finishing their regular season tomorrow against their sister team Boston Aztec U-23 (7-1-1 WPSL East-Northeast) in a doubleheader with the Boston Breakers of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS).
