NEW ENGLAND MUTINY 3, MAINE TIDE 0
Mutiny complete back-to-back weekend schedule with road win at Maine

Therese Smith NORTHPORT, ME (06/27/10) - After a tight 1-0 Saturday night home loss to the Connecticut Passion (3-2-2 WPSL East-Northeast), the New England Mutiny (3-2-3 WPSL East-Northeast) made the tough road trip north to face the Maine Tide (0-7-0 WPSL East-Northeast) at Point Lookout Resort on Sunday afternoon.

The first career tally for Merissa Phipps in a New England uniform would prove to be the eventual game-winning goal, as the Mutiny kept their post-season hopes alive with a 3-0 win.

In the 22nd minute, UConn's Karen Gurnon would break the left flank and send in a cross to the far post to Phipps, who was one of two Mutiny U-20 players called up to start this match. The Monson H.S. star would beat Tide goalkeeper Kortnie Hudgens (7 saves) low & inside the far post for the lead the visitors would not surrender.

New England would go into half-time up 2-0 in the 40th minute, as American International College standout Bryony Parker would also net her first career goal for the Mutiny. Team captain Jenny Maurer broke the right flank and sent in a cross that the All-Northeast-10 Conference selection headed past Hudgens.

UMass' Therese Smith (pictured right) continued her strong first campaign for New England in the 55th minute, scoring her third goal of the season. UConn's Meghan Cunningham drew a foul at the top of the penalty area, and Smith stepped up to the free kick, bending it inside the far post for the final score of the match.

Puerto Rican National Team keeper Julie Arroyo (5 saves) would get the win in goal for the Mutiny, as New England out-shot their hosts by a 13-6 margin. Next up for the Mutiny is a road match at Boston Aztec U-23 (3-1-1 WPSL East-Northeast) on Tues., July 6th before they return to Chicopee Comp. H.S. on Sat., July 10th to face the division-leading Breakers Reserves (6-0-1 WPSL East-Northeast) in the regular season finale.
