LONG ISLAND 2 MUTINY 0
GARDEN CITY, NY- In last season’s Eastern Conference semifinal the Long Island Fury scored in the 4th minute and dominated the first 10 minutes in such a manner that even the staunchest of New England Mutiny supporters were thinking blowout. A veteran and poised Mutiny squad would mount a comeback and move on to the finals with a 4-2 victory.
Last night, it was “deja vu all over again” as the Fury once again would score in the 4th minute and add another just one minute later. This time - there would be no comeback. The Mutiny were blanked for the second consecutive game losing a Women’s Premier Soccer League match to Long Island 2-0 at Adelphi University, the site of the 2009 WPSL National Championship.
Long Island striker Karin Simonian would take a through pass from Cari Roccaro and walk in alone on Mutiny’s Lauren Brodeur; dribble around the defenseless keeper and slot it in for the 1-0 lead. It was only a minute later when Roccaro herself would slide through the soft Mutiny defense and dribble alone on Brodeur for another “lay up” in soccer.
The Mutiny had an opportunity to pull within a goal when Meagan Riemer took a through ball from midfielder Jenny Maurer, but the attempt was smothered by Long Island goalkeeper Jill Mastroianni. The Fury outshot the Mutiny 4-1 in the opening 45 minutes.
The Mutiny carried play in the second half. East Longmeadow’s Jenny Maurer would cover an amazing amount of real estate in the half. The former captain for Boston College would account for five of the Mutiny’s six shots in the second stanza, but current Boston College goalkeeper Mastroianni would save all five.
For the game, Long Island would outshoot the Mutiny 9-7 and have a 6-4 save advantage.
It was Long Island’s first match of the season while the loss sent the Mutiny to a 1-2 record and with several questions. One being whether or not the Mutiny would need a ticket to return to Adelphi on August 1.
