The combination of professional coaches and role-model players of the New England Mutiny makes this Academy Staff one of the most unique in the country. You will find that our staff is comprised of successful coaches at all levels, teachers and players who have reached the pinnacle of the sport of soccer. It is unparalleled in the arena of youth development.     

MARY-FRANCES MONROECo-captain MARY-FRANCES MONROE will be with the Mutiny for a fourth season after leading the team to the WPSL National Finals in 2004 and 2007. “M-F” will enter her third season as the head women’s soccer coach at the University of Albany. In her first season at the helm, she guided Albany to its most successful season in 12 years. Previously, she was an assistant at Albany in 2005 and at Wellesley College in 2004. Mary-Frances played professionally for the Philadelphia Charge and Boston Breakers of the WUSA. In 2005, she played professionally in Sweden with KIF Obrero under current U.S. Women’s National Team coach Pia Sundhage. In college, M-F was a 4-time All-American at UConn and UCLA and a 3-time Hermann Trophy and M.A.C. Award candidate, which are given to the best collegiate female player in the country. During her freshman season at UConn, she set the single-season scoring record with 65 points and earned Freshman of the Year honors that season. M-F also represented the United States at the youth and senior levels, starting in the Nordic Cup for the U-21 National Team that won the championship in Germany. Later that year, she made her debut for the senior Women’s National Team in Australia. Overall, Mary-Frances earned 9 CAPS, starting in 6 games alongside Mia Hamm, for the United States. In high school, she led Northport High School to the New York State Championship in 1996. Mary-Frances Monroe is NASM certified as a personal trainer and holds a USSF “C” coaching license. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology at UCLA.
JAMES LUISJAMES LUIS enters his second season as an Assistant Coach for the Mutiny. He is the Director of Marketing and Promotions for Academica Futebol Club’s Program and the Head Assistant Coach for Quinnipiac University Men’s Soccer. He currently coaches Academica Futebol Club Girls U12 Pride. In the fall of 2006, James was a coach for the Cheshire High School girls soccer teams. He has been a clinician for Collegiate Soccer Systems and instructor of pre-season camps at various CT High Schools. James Luis is a Certified CPR/First Aid and a Certified ‘D’ licensed coach.     

ERIN GATTOCo-captain ERIN GATTO remains one of the most popular players for the Mutiny. In 2007, O’Grady returned to the team from a brief “retirement” to score the division-clinching goal against Connecticut and assisting on the double-overtime game-winning goal against Atlantic City, which catapulted the Mutiny to the WPSL National Final Four. The greatest testament to Erin’s dedication to the organization came during last season’s National Championship. After missing the semifinal match on Saturday, due to a wedding (her own), the former Erin O’Grady flew to Tampa to play in the Finals the next day.

Erin played professionally for the Boston Breakers of the WUSA. “Grady” was a 1st-team All-American for Syracuse University in 1998 and 2000 and was inducted into that University’s Hall of Fame in 2006. Erin was an assistant coach at Assumption College in 2001 and 2002. Erin Gatto graduated with a degree in Elementary Special Education and she is currently a teacher at Glastonbury Elementary School.

KRISTIN SHAWKRISTIN SHAW enters her second season as a player for the Mutiny. She played soccer at the University of Washington and enters her second season as an assistant coach for the University at Albany (both NCAA Division I programs). Prior to coming to the area she served as head coach for youth Premier teams in Colorado Springs, CO. Kristin played with the WPSL’s Colorado Springs Sabers in 2006 and coached the Colorado Springs Premier girls’ soccer teams from 2004 to 2006, as well as the Northern California Premier U-17 girl’s team. Kristin Shaw also coached the Northern California Olympic Development U-17 team. She has a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in Finance.

CHRIS LEGATESCHRIS LEGATES is entering his sixth season as an assistant with the Mutiny, with his primary emphasis on working with and training the goalkeepers. He will enter his 12th season as head soccer coach at St. Joseph College in West Hartford, CT, being named Conference Coach of the Year in 2003, 2005 and 2006. Coach LeGates led the Blue Jays to school records for wins in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2005 and 2006. He was formerly the associate head coach of women’s soccer at Quinnipiac University from 1992-1997 where the team was ranked in the national Top 25 in every season. Chris is currently the U-18 and U-15 girls’ premier coach for Academica FC, as well as technical director for that program. Chris has also been involved in the Connecticut Olympic Development Program and has established himself as a strong lecturer & clinician. Chris Legates holds an Advanced National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

JILL SERAFINOJILL SERAFINO is in her second season as assistant women’s soccer coach at American International College (AIC). Jill currently serves as the Mental Conditioning Coach for the Mutiny. She is also the head coach of the U-16 girls AFC Mutiny premier team. Jill coached at West Springfield High School and Conard High School for two seasons, while also tutoring the Mutiny U-17 and U-15 women’s club teams for two seasons. She was also assistant coach at STCC in 2002, helping lead her squad to a State Championship and a New England Finals. Jill Serafino teaches Sports Management at AIC. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Sport Management, Exercise Science, and Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Athletic Counseling.
